SuperGrid Institute Achieves Breakthrough in Superconducting Fault Current Limiter Technology with Shanghai Superconductor's HTS Tapes
2025-03-10
In December 2024, SuperGrid Institute announced a groundbreaking achievement: the successful demonstration of its resistive superconducting fault current limiter (RSFCL) technology, integrated with a mechanical DC circuit breaker, during critical 50kV tests. This innovative, compact, and environmentally friendly solution, developed by the French company, is poised to reduce the size of DC protection equipment by 40-50%. With applicability across both AC and DC utility networks, the technology has demonstrated significant potential, particularly in marine power systems.
Since 2023, Shanghai Superconductor (SST) has been a key partner in this endeavor, supplying high-temperature superconducting (HTS) tapes specifically tailored for the project. SST's contributions were instrumental in laying the groundwork for the project's success.
This milestone not only underscores the growing role of superconducting technology in high-voltage DC systems but also highlights the exceptional performance of SST's HTS tapes in supporting international superconducting fault current limiter initiatives. Looking ahead, SST remains committed to driving innovation, prioritizing customer needs, and further enhancing the performance of its superconducting tapes and related services. By strengthening supply capabilities and fostering close collaboration with partners, SST aims to accelerate the advancement of superconducting applications worldwide.
